  • Fun While It Lasted - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

I bought this car as a daily driver with 110,000 miles on it. It was fun at first. Had no problems the first three weeks, then the problems began. I did a complete tune up to the vehicle and I was still only getting 11 MPG. After all the maintenance was up to date, the check engine light came on a day later. After a compression check I found out the valves were sticking and the heads needed to be replaced, an expensive fix. Then a day later the front wheels started shaking really bad and the rear differential was giving off a high pitched whine. After taking it to a mechanic I found out the 4 front balljoints and 2 A-arms had to be replaced. BUY WITH CAUTION.

Great truck amazing for winter! Very hard to get stuck hard corp truck off roading. Tight seating not good with kids perfect if your single. Dont trust the dealerships. I had no brakes or dash lights or muffler. O2 sensors are pricey and the truck is a gas pig for sure! But little fix on it had it a year and had to repair dealer goofs. Good by if weather turns fast.

  • Disappointed. - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Im very disappointed with my Explorer. It handles terribly, even dangerously, and wants to veer off to the right and left when it hits potholes that for other cars that would be inconsequential. The interior also has a very cheap feel.

This is the roughest riding vehicle I have ever owned. Even minor road irregularities feel like major speed bumps which causes major sqweaks and rattles. If you are looking for a smooth quite ride, I would advise you to look else where. If you want a good looking truck and do not mind the harsh ride, this is could be your truck.

  • Too many Problems - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I am the original owner and bought in March 2000. Only has 60,000 and had to rebuild transmission at 50,000. The key lock does not always unlock tailgate. Had the hood and top repainted (at Ford Dealer) three times due to acid rain (poor paint). My other cars not had the problem. Has many squeaks and noises. I have vehicle cleaned and waxed regularly and the back bumper is rusted. I would not buy a Ford again.

  • Ford - Quality is Job One???? - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Abosolutely pitiful build quality. The dashboard rattles and squeeks incessantly from no less than three different areas. And the center console makes a loud knocking noise while driving, the cheap plastic began cracking after less than two months on the road. Lets see...the overhead console dangles from the roof because only 2 of the four screws were actually installed at the factory; and my favorite - the doors are made out of recycled beer cans, I believe. When you close the doors you get a crashing metal-on-metal sound, not the nice solid "whoomp" that other new vehicles (that cost far less, btw) exhibit. The ride is terrible...wear your kidney belt.

I liked my explorer a lot when I first bought it. However, that began to change over time. The truck inside and outside is great. It looks nice and feels even better when youre sitting inside. The problem comes when you actually have to drive it. Hold on because it is a very bumpy ride. You feel every little obstruction in the road and it gets magnified so a little bump feels like youre driving off a cliff. I still like my explorer now but just not as much as I used to.

  • Another Inpulse Buy Here... - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Well I bought this truck because honestly it looked great and I felt that I was getting a great deal for it. Its been consistent that every year I had to put in about $1k to get it passed inspection. I have had so many problems with this thing. Those sensors seem to go at the worse time and each convienently costs about 100 dollars to replace. I seem to find problems that even a Ford dealership has problems fixing. Now my car needs heavy negotiation with the gas pedal to start up cold. Ive already spent 800 dollars at the dealership to get it resolved. They say its fixed, but the very next day I have the same problem.

  • Good and Bad - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

After 46000 miles and 3 years I have had to have over $1200 in repairs not to mention dumping a $1000 a year into it every year since Ive had it. It just hasnt held up. While the exterior looks great, the engine is lacking, a lot of misfires and sluggish performance, and suspension problems now. Its a nice vehicle, the ride is fine, interior quality is ok, the build quality just hasnt held up well.

Doesnt seem to do well on snow and ice. Steering also seems tight.
